Personality and learning theories flourished emphasis of all major theories: hypothetico-deductive systems intervening variables linked to antecedent conditions and consequent (adult) behavior. Sigmund koch study of psychology as a science age of theory is dead: grand personality and learning theories have failed concepts poorly described, not well defined operationally, not clearly linked to observables. Broadened, liberalized, loosening conceptual definitions to cope w/ difficulty of specifying links to antecedents and consequents (cid:498)harmful(cid:499: but it"s not actually dead. Bandura"s theory grew from a liberalized approach to reinforcement led to new findings, new social learning theory. Social learning theory, social cognitive theory, trait theories. Problem of causes-effects not such a big problem. Other liberalizing changes: pragmatic behaviorism in clinical psychology, development of atheoretical community psychology. Erikson"s theory especially thrives (cid:523)ego theory(cid:524) vigorous pursuit of research, more sophisticated now. Family, society, culture paradigm enthusiastic followers, and training institutes. No research base for theoretical advances and to test important hypothesis.
