Clinical psychologists have long recognized there are psychological consequences associated w/ ill health, as well as physical consequences associated w/ many psychological disorders. Wasn"t until 1970s that psychologists from other non-clinical subdisciplines began to recognize many ways psychological principles could be applied to health & health care. One of first terms to be used in 1970s to describe r/s b/w psychology & health - behavioural medicine - stressing integration of biomedical & behavioural approaches. Health psychology - aggregate of specific educational, scientific, professional contributions of discipline of psychology to promotion & maintenance of health, prevention/treatment of illness & identification of etiological & diagnostic correlates of health, illness, related dysfunction. Health psychology - compilation of all that psychology has to offer to diagnosis & treatment of illness & ppl"s attempts to maintain health & well-being. In this context, word health means more than just absence of illness.
