Has 23 pairs of chromosomes, which contain genetic recipes for development of new indiv. W/i 12 hours after fertilization, single cell begins dividing. W/i week, emerging embryo shows 3 distinct cell layers that are beginnings of all tissues. Nervous system develops from outer layer, called ectoderm. Neural groove - in developing embryo, groove b/w neural folds. Neural tube - embryonic structure w/ subdivisions corresponding to future forebrain, At head end of neural tube, 3 subdivisions become apparent midbrain, hindbrain. Anterior division of brain containing cerebral hemispheres, thalamus, hypothalamus. Rear division of brain, which, in mature vertebrate, contains cerebellum, pons, medulla. Interior of neural tube becomes fluid-filled cerebral ventricles of brain, central canal of spinal cord, passages that connect them. By end of eighth week, human embryo shows rudimentary beginnings of most body organs. Rapid development of brain reflected in fact that by this time, head is half total size of embryo. Embryo - earliest stage in developing animal.
