Law is codiied (writen down), judges play an acive role in the proceedings, experts are called by the court, and the lawyer"s role is, in part, to assist the court; it is used in many european countries. The defence represening the accused vs. the prosecuion (crown) represening the people present their posiion before an imparial judge or jury, who atempt to determine the truth of the case; it is used in north america. Role of a defense lawyer is to be an advocate for the client and vigorously defend the clients to the full extent permited by law. Expert witnesses are appointed by one party in the dispute. Experts are appointed by the court rather than being appointed by one side in the dispute. Legal system have both adversarial and inquisitorial elements but are more strongly associated with one system or the other.
