The (cid:1154)rouge test(cid:1155) suggests that chimps, orangutans, dolphins, magpies, and perhaps elephants have a sense of the self, though many other animals do not. As for humans, it seems that self recognition develops around 18-24 months. As we age, we place less importance on physical aspects of the self and more on our psychology (thoughts, feelings, traits, etc. ) Self-schemas: an organized body of knowledge about the self (e. g. , attitudes, preferences, traits) that influences what people notice, think, and remember about themselves. People who are told that extraversion is associated with professional success are more likely to remember times they were extraverted (same thing is shown with people who are told that introversion is associated with professional success) Desire to see ourselves in a positive light can influence what we are likely to remember. Self-concept clarity - the extent to which knowledge is about the self is stable, clearly and consistently defined.
