Language: a system of communication using sounds or symbols that enables us to express our feelings, thoughts, ideas, and experiences. Language makes it possible to create new and unique sentences because it has a structure that is (a) hierarchical (b) governed by rules. The hierarchical nature of language means that it consists of a series of small components that can be combined to form form larger units. The universal need to communicate with language. Language is primarily used for communication, whether it be conversing with another person or reading what someone has written. Wernicke identified areas in the frontal and temporal lobes that are involved in different aspects of language. In 1957, b. f. skinner, the main proponent of behaviorism in which he proposed that languages is learned through reinforcement. The same year, linguist noam chomsky proposed that human language is coded in the genes.
