Introduction: researchers design their study to answer their research question. Institutional approval: depending on what you are studying, different institutions must approve your research project, research with animals: institutional animal care and use committee (iacuc, research with humans: institutional review board (irb) In many cases, the research question dictates the type of participants that will be used: most often the participants are humans but they can also be other animals. Obtaining animals (rats: the researcher must decide what type of rat to use, must also determine the age and sex of the animal, animals must be well cared for. Sample size: how many participants do you need in order to accurately test the hypothesis, the larger the sample size, the greater the power. Procedure: specify all procedural details that you will need to carry out, must carefully plan out the whole experiment.
