Case study: an in-depth analysis of an individual, social unit, event, or other phenomenon. Case studies can be a study of a person, current event, program, work group, etc. Example: how nurse practitioners and registered nurses who work in canadian outpatient oncology facilities collaborate with one another. Usually will examine all members of a group/team. Common thread among case studies: whether it examines one person, or a group of people, is that it only studies one (cid:1154)unit(cid:1155) Flexibility - allows researchers to draw on a variety of techniques to gather data. Can provide much detail about a certain phenomenon; goes more in-depth. Can provide insight into possible areas of study and stimulate the formation of hypotheses for experimental studies. Can test hypotheses and provide evidence for a scientific viewpoint. Provides external validity for previous studies conducted in laboratories. Qualitative case study: examines an individual case in depth, within its real-life context.
