Moment first sperm manages to penetrate egg"s coating, egg will release chemical sealing coating & keeps all other sperm from entering. Zygote - fertilized egg containing chromosomes from both egg & sperm. From first moment of existence, zygote has one thing in common w/ person it will become - sex. Each human sperm & egg contain 23 chromosomes. Egg always has x chromosome, but sperm can have either x or y chromosome. Germinal stage - 2-week period beginning at conception. Zygote migrates back down fallopian tube & implants itself in wall of uterus. Embryo - implanted zygote on uterine wall. Embryonic stage - period lasting from second week until about 8th week. Fetal stage - period lasting from 9th week until birth. During fetal stage, brain cells begin generating axons & dendrites.
