Cells in the nervous system that communicate with one another to perform information processing tasks. Composed of cell body, dentrites, and the axon. This was discovered by santiago ramon y cajal"s staining of neurons in the brain. There are 3 types of neurons: snesory, motor and inter. Aka soma, the largest component of the neuron that coordinates the information-processing tasks and keeps cells alive. Functions such as protein synthesis, energy production and metabolism. Contains the nucluus, which houses chromosomes that contain our dna. Surrounded by porous cell membrane that allows some molecules to flow into and out of the cell. Two specialized extensions that help them to communicate: dentrites and axons. Receive information from other neurons and relay it to the cell body. Carries info to other neurons, muscles, or glands. Demyleinating diseases such as ms is from myelin sheath deteriorating, slowing the transmission of information from one neuron to another.
