Political culture - fundamental values, beliefs, orientations widely held w/i political community. Political scientists can examine political culture through sample surveys. Indicate what proportion of public has various politically relevant attitudes. Political culture can be analyzed by looking at nature of political discourse used in political life to discuss & make use of key terms. In many countries there are diff subcultures based on groupings. Democracy involves various processes & institutions such as elections, political parties. Often suggested that democratic political culture needed if democracy is to be sustained. Political culture can be classified in terms of 3 basic types. Parochial cultures - most people largely unaware of political system, do not have much in way of expectations about what gov should do, do not participate in politics. Subject political cultures - citizens exhibit awareness of politics system & policies gov adopts but not oriented to trying to affect policies.
