Document Summary

Ling 401 article discussion 1 - hillenbrand et. al, 2001. Previous studies show that people can identify vowels even when the center of the vowel is removed and only the on-glide/off-glide remain. Vowels with static formant patterns (synthetically created) are often mis-identified. Stevens and house"s classic study found that vowels produced in isolation as compared with vowels produced in a cvc syllable had different formant qualities. Most notably, f2 values varied considerably as an effect of place of articulation of the surrounding consonants. They recorded cvcs in symmetrical and unsymmetrical environments. Speakers: 12 speakers - 6 men and 6 women, ages 25-65. All from the usa, all phonetically trained. Recorded vowels in isolation and in all the combinations of initial consonants and final consonants. The recordings were analyzed and acoustic measurements noted. The stimuli were then presented to 24 graduate students in speech-language pathology, who were asked to identify the vowel. /u/ and /i/ were identified significantly better than average.
