Chapter 7 addressing sources of inequality and health dispariies: ethnicity and the life course. Ethnicity is a group idenity that is performed by people. Race or ethnicity denotes relaions between people and not substanial qualiies possessed by them. Ethnicity is dynamic and changing socially constructed way of categorizing people. Ethnicity: is a complex and muli-dimensional phenomenon which includes culture, ethno culture, ancestry/origin, ethic idenity, language, religion and race or some mixture of all these elements. Ethnic groups: socially based grouping that exist within a cultural framework. Ethno culture: variety of shared meanings, norms, mores, values, pracices, tradiions and insituions that re associated with ethnic groups and lend cultural support to processes of ethnic ideniicaion by encoding such experience into a set of symbolic paterns". Ethnic ancestry/ origin: refers to place where an individual or her ancestors were born.
