Sugar act included in final price when goods were sold to colonists. Custom duties (indirect tax) on cloth, sugar, wine, coffee . Educated and influential people (lawyers, journalists, merchants) directly affected by taxes. Colonists required to house and feed british soldiers. Britain had right to pass any law it wished for the colonies. Attempt to restore supremacy of britain the townshend acts taxed goods imported from britain. British troops land in colonies to help enforce townshend acts. Quartering acts -- colonists needed to feed them. Many refused to hire them for labour and often overcharged them for products. 5 march 1770 the boston massacre (killed 5 colonists) Angry crowd threw rocks, soldiers ordered not to fire, but heard a shot fire and soldiers started to shoot (almost like how battle of lexington started) Repeal of townshend duties on all except tea (a small tax) Permit british east india company to sell tea directly to colonists, with a small tax.
