How program goals, strategies, and standards relate to ethical judgments. Situations that call for sensitive judgments usually involve the use of goals, strategies, or standards. Goals: a desired end toward which effort is directed; an end that can be attained. Goals, strategies and standards must continually be evaluated. Values: the qualities and beliefs a person considers valuable or worthwhile. A product of early and continued socialization (families, society, culture, teachers, religion, friends, professional colleagues, organizations, etc. ). Basic values: values that are absolute, regardless of the situation or context. Relative values: values that varies, taking on more or less importance depending on the situation. The better we know ourselves the better we can recognize our values. A code of ethics provides a tangible framework for thinking about professional values and how those values might influence our behavior in the formal group setting.
