3 assumptions: young kids = social behavior novices want to act in acceptable ways, but can be unsuccessful", learning societal rules is complex, takes time and practice not automatic or easy, kids make mistakes. Problems: uncertainty about what the rules are, uncertainty about how to follow a certain rule, confusion over what to do instead, lack of ability or instrumental know-how. Solution: must be developmentally able, clear on what to do, tell children appropriate behaviors to substitute, reasonable, definable, positive. Problems: meaningless rules, no ownership of the rules. Solution: give reasons, give kids some say. Problems 8: mixed messages: fail to acknowledge compliance. Consequences that reduce mistaken behaviors: corrective consequences, enhances self-control (effective, punishments, detract from self-control (punishments) Natural consequences: happen w/o adult intervention, signal that actions matter, have the power to influence outcomes, most effective when obvious and kids care about outcome.
