CRIM 402 Chapter Notes - Chapter 2: Great Range, Genetic Variation, Advantageous

38 views10 pages

Document Summary

Chapter looks at questions of how natural selection/evolution works, how organisms adapt to environments, how some traits selected over others & passed to next generation. Traits include structural, biochemical, physiological adaptations & also behavioural traits which are equally adaptive. Look at nature vs nurture argument & show there is not really a dichotomy but interaction b/w influences. Will consider criminal behaviours & crime types & discuss how they may have been advantageous. Will consider various evolutionary theories seeking to explain why behaviours may have been adaptive. Natural selection - is what drives evolution. All living organisms adapt to environments & adaptations lead to increased survival & reproductive success for organisms possessing them. Adaptation occurs over generations, usually over a great many generations. Trait such as avoiding new foods, having extra fat, or being shy must be genetically controlled in order for evolution to act on it. Anything that is modified by evolution has genetic component.
