Social control theory - gained steadily in popularity since mid 1970s. Emile durkheim felt that indiv aspirations & appetites knew no natural bounds. Travis hirschi premised much of social bond theory on durkheimian notion that many indivs would be inclined to engage in in deviance in absence of effective social controls/social bonds. Albert reiss - published article called delinquency as a failure of personal and social. Distinguished b/w personal control & social controls.
