Social control theory & developmental life course theories. Origins of social control theory - can be traced back to emile durkheim & chicago. Social control theory - gained steadily in popularity since mid 1970s. Emile durkheim felt that indiv aspirations & appetites knew no natural bounds. W/o civilization, humans would be unrestrained & lacking in moral standards. Travis hirschi premised much of social bond theory on durkheimian notion that many indivs would be inclined to engage in in deviance in absence of effective social controls/social bonds. Shaw & mckay were amongst forerunners of contemporary social control theory. Identified cause-effect r/s b/w social disorganization & breakdown of informal social controls. Albert reiss - published article called delinquency as a failure of personal and social. Distinguished b/w personal control & social controls. Said personal controls came from w/i & consisted of indiv"s internalization of rules & norms of society. Emphasized importance of informal social controls exercised by parents & by community institutions.
