Gender - powerful correlate of criminal behavior. Many data sources reveal men far exceed women in rates of participation in array of criminal behaviors. Until recently, little research compared women & men in motivations & for participation in crime. Gender gap - difference b/w men & women in diff areas. Generalization problem - question of whether/not it is possible to explain female criminality w/ mainstream theories of crime originally developed to explain male criminality. Assault level 1 (offence not including weapon/serious bodily harm) Ranked second for women & first for men. Differences in arrest rates particularly pronounced for serious violent offences. Men vastly outnumbered women in serious crimes. Smallest gender gaps in offending - for relatively less serious property crimes. Male youths have twice arrest rate of female youths fr violent cc violations. Narrowing of gender gap in crime over time. Significant narrowing occurred in gender gap in arrests for property & violent crimes.
