It is within this reciprocity of ghanaian african american history that we find hip-hop entering the ghanaian cultural lexicon in the mid-1980s. The implicit generational divide wherever hip-hop migrates arose almost immediately, as they wore baggy pants and boots, and were known for their baldheads, hence the term sakura. Hence, not only was hip-hop first adopted by college students with access to these resources, but many of the first-recorded ghanaian rap groups were also formed in and around university campuses. However, these early-middle-class inroads of hip-hop eventually shifted to the poorer youth in accra and kumasi. In an increasingly privatizing economy, the potential for appropriation of hip-hop was transferred to the larger sector of ghana"s poor as a part of the values of a globalizing cosmopolitan lifestyle.
