Week 7 reading 1 : unbearable weight : feminism, western culture, and the body by susan bordo. Our bodies no less than anything else that is human are constituted by culture. Social practice changed people"s experience of their bodies and their possibilities. Physical body can also be an instrument or medium of power. Female bodies more than male have been more vulnerable to the extremes and forms of cultural manipulation of the body. A women"s body is associated with multiple things from family life, mythology, science, philosophy, and religion. Manipulation of body has been closely linked to anorexia. Dualist belief is that the human existence consist of the physical aspect being the body and then the mental/spiritual aspect. The body is experienced as an alien it"s not me but something attached to me. The body is experienced as confinement / limitation. Week 7 reading 2: foucault , sport and exercise: power, knowledge and transforming the self.
