- how leaders motivate followers to accomplish designated goals
- emphasizes relationship b/t leader’s style & charac of followers & org setting
→ choose behaviours that complement/supplement what is missing in work setting
- leadership motivates when it makes path to goal clear & easy to travel thru coaching &
direction, removing obstacles/roadblocks, making work personally satisfying
- expectancy theory = followers will be motivated if they think they are capable of performing
their work, efforts will result in certain outcome, payoffs for doing work worthwhile
→ challenge: leader must understand fully goals of each follower & rewards assoc w/
goals
