Document Summary

Atoms: the smallest units of an element that retain the properties of the element. Molecules: units of two or more atoms of the same or different elements bonded together. Cells: the basic structural and functional units of living things: the human body contains four types of tissue: muscle, nerve, epithelial, and connective, these tissues are organized in varying combinations to form organs. Water, vitamins, and minerals are taken into the body without being broken into smaller units, but proteins, carbohydrates, and fats must be digested further before they can be absorbed. Proteins are broken down into amino acids, most of carbohydrate is broken down into sugars like glucose, and most fats are digested to produce molecules with long carbon chains called fatty acids. The sugars, amino acids, and fatty acids can then be absorbed into the body. The fibre in whole grains, fruits, and vegetables cannot be digested and is not absorbed into the body.
