The beauty and necessity of good research designs. Lo 2. 1: identify why we need research designs: in the early 1990s, an autism treatment called facilitated communication was developed, as developers thought that autism was a motor disorder. Such designs can also help eliminate biases when examining any phenomena: relying on subjective impressions is another reason why we need research designs. Prefrontal lobotomy was believed to be an effective treatment for schizophrenia, as well as other disorders. The fibres connecting the frontal lobes to the thalamus were severed as scientists were certain that removing that part of the brain would cure this diseases. Heuristics - mental shortcut or rule of thumb that helps us streamline our thinking and make sense of our world. These shortcuts reduce the cognitive energy required to solve problems and lead us to simplify reality: system 2 or analytical thinking : slow and reflective, taking mental effort.
