Defined by canadian nurses association (can), culture is defined as the shared patterns of learned values and behaviours that are transmitted over time and that distinguish the members of one group from another. It can include language, ethnicity, spiritual and religious beliefs socioeconomic class, gender, sexual orientation, age, group, history, geographic origin, education, and childhood/life experiences. When providing care, nurses must not discriminate their patients on the basis of any of the above. There are two components to culture: culturally visible components: cultural components that are easily seen. This includes cultural clothing, jewelry, charms, or even hairstyles: culturally invisible components: cultural components that are not easily seen. This includes one"s value belief system that drives visible practices. Cultural pluralism: a perspective that promotes respect for the differences of others. These differences include different beliefs, values, behaviours and even ways of life.
