Structurally, the respiratory system consist of two parts: the upper respiratory system: the nose, nasal cavity, pharynx, and associated structures, the lower respiratory system: the larynx, trachea, bronchi, and the lungs. Pharynx: lies posterior to the nasal and oral cavities, superior to the larynx, and anterior to the cervical vertebrae, it is composed of skeletal muscles and is lined with a mucous membrane. Nasopharynx: posterior to the nasal cavity; extends to the soft palate; receives air from the nasal cavity and dust-laden mucus. It also exchanges small amounts of air with the auditory tubes to equalize air pressure between the middle ear and the atmosphere. Oropharynx: posterior to the oral cavity and extends from soft palate to the hyoid bone. It serves as a common passageway for air, food, and drink. Laryngopharynx: begins at the level of the hyoid bone.
