Increased scholarly interest in food within social and environmental sciences and humanities. Food involves many aspects of human life and social relations: An indicator of quality of life and health. A marker of class and ethnic identity. Forms linkages and interconnections among food-related issues. Contributions to this field: historical, cultural, and sociological, post-modern and post- structuralist, and food system approaches. One of the main defining characteristics of food studies. Analysis of food consumption has largely been limited to the study of "negative pathologies of malnutrition, hunger, and adulteration" rather than its "more intimate and positive features. The objective of food studies is to gather knowledge from these diverse fields and unite them to discover their relationships and interconnections. A fusion of the social sciences and humanities realm with the world of science and technology. Covers a wide range of topics by using methodologies and approaches from traditional disciplines as well through the development of new perspectives unique to the field.
