Identity is a major deal in contemporary society as people went out of traditional ways. Identity was a bigger deal from the 18th century on: debates about nature vs. nurture. Identity and the unconscious: psychoanalysis-studied by sigmund freud in the 20th century. Developed stages of the person that was useful for their integration into society. Identities were produced to manage fears and desires. Babies have no identity: they only have primal drives/instincts, realization that the world/mother is a separate being-major step in socialization; moving towards the other , freudian theory of psychosocial development.
