Document Summary

Language and power are always intertwined in cultural expression. Words are used to look at codes/ sign systems (language) that makes representation possible. In 2002, victoria"s secret, a documentary about teen violence in victoria, bc (youth gang problem) The doc assembled a picture of an emerging social crisis that was hidden . This influenced many new school security measures and the youth criminal justice act (2003), people attempted to combat the problem. Statistics tell the story of youth violence differently. Youth crime does not show any significant rise from 2000-2010. In fact, homicides dropped 29%, breaking and entering fell 10% and serious assault 12% The severity of youth crime dropped markedly from 2003 -2005 and continues through the decade. Statistics appear to refute media claims of an unprecedented crisis of youth violence, but statistics themselves need to be understood under context as well. The huge increase in youth crime between 1986-1992 correlated with the increase in the youth population.
