Issues with connection between theory and research, 1)the form of theory, Theory: an explanation of observed regularities or patterns, can guide research. Grand theories: provide ways of looking at the world (can be inspiration for a wide variety of research programs) Non-theoretical studies provide data that could eventually be used to evaluate a theory. Deductive: most common approach to social research, figure 1. 1, begins with the statement of a theory from which hypotheses may be tested. Inductive: theory is the outcome of research, collection of data then used to develop theories, hypotheses and concepts. Inductive method used: data is collected to come up with info required to construct a theory. Grounded theory: approach to analysis of qualitative data, goal=use data to generate theory. Impossible to conduct research that is purely deductive or inductive. Concerned with what constitutes knowledge and how knowledge is to be acquired.
