PSY 434 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Echoic Memory, Iconic Memory, Short-Term Memory
Document Summary
Learning is a relatively permanent change in behaviour as a function of experience: can require recall of the behaviour or changes. Learning and memory are on two sides of the same coin, which would be called experience-dependent behaviour. Learning is concerned with attending to the information (encoding) and storing it for later use (consolidation) Memory is concerned with retrieving the information from where it was stored (retrieval) Problems with encoding, consolidation and retrieval will result in an impairment of function: sensory memory and short term memory. Is responsible for holding information for periods beyond what can be stored by sensory memory, but it not permanent. Contains information that is going to be acted on or used in some fashion. Does not have to come from the environment. Can manipulate information that is retrieved from long term stores. Letters or words that sound similar: bean and beam, word length effect.
