Stressor- a situation or stimulus in the environment that causes stress. Stress is used by engineers where it refers to stresses on materials and building structures but is not used to describe it in people. Traumatic event- a stressor that is so severe that it can produce long-term psychological or health consequences. 3 different ways that researchers approached the study of stress: stressors as stimuli. Approach focuses on identifying different types of stressful events. Approach has pinpointed categories of events that most of us find dangerous, unpredictable, and stressful, as well as the people who are most susceptible to stress following different events. For example: first year university students show a greater response to negative life events like a breakup as opposed to older men and women.
