Psy105 chapter 2: psychology as a science. Two core beliefs: the universe operates according to natural laws, such laws are discoverable and testable. Science is a body of knowledge that we can discern. There is a predictability of human nature. Sir francis bacon developed it and emphasized avoiding biases distorted beliefs based on person"s subjective sense of reality. Theories ideas about laws that govern phenomena. Hypothesis a general statement about the way variables relate that is objectively falsifiable. Karl popper a good theory must be able to be proven false: there must be a way to test the theory. The scientific approach: make observations, develop hypothesis, test hypothesis, build a theory. Identify questions of interest and review the literature. 1: develop a testable hypothesis, get ethical approval explain what and how, select research method, choose participants and collect data, analyze data and accept or reject hypothesis, seek scientific review, publish and replicate, build a theory.
