Document Summary
2009 place in international encyclopedia of human geography. I would argue that these are all problematic in nature. While definitions of place have evolved overtime, i don"t feel it is our job to determine which definition is correct. Instead i feel the opposite is crucial in accepting place to be an umbrella term to describe various different elements of time, space, mobility, the human experience, and more. Place can include a physical dwelling, a memory, or even a culture. It can be defined by all five human senses, both together and separately. It"s important for it to be all encompassing in nature so as not to restrict the usage of the phrase. As planners the term is used frequently in reference to a wide variety of things such as a neighbourhood or community group. Restricting it"s usage to a definition would restrict our ability as planners to utilize.
