PHL 214 Chapter 4: PHL Chapter 4
Document Summary
When claims conflict, one must be false (both cant be true) Background information: collection of very well supported beliefs that we all rely on to inform our actions and choices: basic everyday facts, beliefs based on good evidence, justified claims (common sense) If a claim conflicts with our background beliefs we have good reason to doubt it. Possible that a conflicting claim is true and background info is unfounded. Proportion ones belief to the evidence (measure out our belief according to the strength of reasons) The more evidence a claim has in its favour, the stronger our belief in it should be. Expert: some one who is more knowledgeable in a particular subject area or field then most other people are. More likely to be right because: have access to more info on the subject than we do, better at judging that info than we are.
