Document Summary
First three stages of the christian contemplative life - called the unitive state. Purgative , illuminative", unitive don"t refer to discrete stages, but a way of travel that defines the major experiences of the journey. View of the unitive stage begins with the dark night of the spirit - onset of the transformational process. Up until this point, we are actively reforming ourselves and doing what we can to bring about an abiding union with the divine. At a certain point, the divine steps in and takes over. Falling away from of the ego-center, which leaves you looking into an empty space in yourself. You cannot recognize the divine with the ego-center; shatters expectations of light and bliss. Must find your way in the dark, and the special eye which allows you to do so opens up. Call this a state of oneness or union. Further stage called the experience of no-self.
