Document Summary

Asthma chronic inflammatory disorder of airways: involves a complex interaction of airway obstruction, bronchial hyper responsiveness (very twitchy, responding to things that normally people wouldn"t respond to), and an underlying inflammation, inflammation causes varying degrees of obstruction in airways recurrent episodes of wheezing, breathlessness, chest tightness, and cough esp. at night & in early morning. Never given an ace inhibitor to somebody who has asthma because side effect is dry, nagging cough which will exacerbate asthma: occurs d/t environmental effects on airways triggering series of events in immune system of genetically predisposed person airway inflammation & bronchoconstriction, key characteristic: episodic & reversibility of obstruction & associated symptoms (cough, wheeze, chest tightness, dyspnea) can resolve spontaneously or with treatment. Allergens animal dander, dust mites, perfumes, cockroaches: may be seasonal or year round, exaggerated immunoglobulin e (ige) response, allergens attach to ige receptors on mast cells, complexes last 2nd exposure mast cell degranulation even years after initial exposure.
