New cells are formed and pushed to the surface to replace the stratum corneum. Characteristic regenerative or sloughing process takes about 28 days to complete. Among germinal cells, there are melanocytes, which manufacture melanin skin colour. No blood cells in the epidermis, cells are bathed in lymph fluid. No nerve cells but free nerve endings in dermis layer such as heat, cold, pain, and pressure sensors.
