Respiratory system can be broken down into two major components: Conducting airways: nasopharyngeal and tracheobronchial apparatus: involves the nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, and bronchia, and some of the bronchioles, responsible for conducting air in and out of the respiratory units. Respiratory units: alveolar pulmonary region of the respiratory system where the actual air exchange or gas exchange takes place: small bronchioles, terminal bronchioles, alveoli ducts, and alveoli, involved in the act of respiration or gas exchange. This is the gas exchange that occurs between lung air in the alveoli and the blood air in the blood system. Exchange of carbon dioxide and oxygen takes place at the alveoli blood-capillary membrane. This is where gas exchange between the blood system and the individual tissue cells in the body.
