NUR 80A/B Chapter Notes - Chapter 9: The Control Group, Primary Nursing, Western Electric
Document Summary
Research design incorporates key methodologic decisions about fundamental form of study and spells out researcher"s strategies for obtaining info that"s accurate and interpretable. Some researchers examine the effects of a new intervention; in others, researchers gather info about existing phenomena. This is a distinction between experimental and non-experimental research. Researchers usually design studies to involve comparisons enhancing interpretability of results. Consider this example: women who had an abortion were compared with women who delivered a baby in terms of emotional well-being. Without comparison group, we wouldn"t know whether abortion group members" emotional status was anomalous. Sometimes they"re collected in real-world settings and other times it"s collected in highly controlled environments established for research purposes. Manipulation of independent variable; no randomization and/or no comparison group but efforts to compensate for this lack. Subjects in groups being compared are different people. Subjects in groups being compared are the same people at different times or in different conditions.
