A therapeutic relationship is a professional, interpersonal alliance in which the nurse and client join together for a de ned period to achieve health-related treatment goals. Regardless of time spent, each relationship can be meaningful. Term client can refer to individual, family, group, or community with identi ed health care. Nurse-client relationship interdependent, neither is an object of study; mutual discovery need requiring nursing interventions and authentic. Helping relationships: helper takes responsibility for the conduct of the relationship and for maintaining appropriate boundaries. Relationship has speci c purpose and health- related goals. Relationship terminates when the identi ed goal is met. Focus of the relationship is one needs of the helpee. Choice of who to be in relationship is not available to either helper or helpee. Self-disclosure is limited for the helper, encouraged for the helpee. Understanding should always be put into words. Both parties have equal responsibility for the conduct of the relationship.
