General adaptation syndrome: general adaption syndrome- a model of stress experience consisting of three stages, alarm reaction, resistance and exhaustion, alarm reaction: occurs when there is a when a threat or challenge activates the physiological stress response. The energy level and coping effectiveness decreases in response to the initial shock: resistance- activates various biochemical, psychological and behavioural mechanisms that give an individual more energy and coping mechanisms to overcome or remove the source of stress. When this happens the body the body reduces resources to the immune system: exhaustion- most of use are able to remove the source of stress or remove ourselves from that source before becoming exhausted. People who are frequently exhausted have risk of long term physiological and psychological damage. Job burnout- the process of emotional exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced person accomplishment that results from prolonged exposures to stressors. Emotional exhaustion- lack of energy, tiredness and a feeling that one"s emotional resources are depleted.
