Communication process model aka mechanistic model of communication. Improving communication coding/decoding: sender or receiver have similar codebooks, sender is experienced encoding that message, sender or receiver are motivated and able to use the selected channel, sender or receiver have shared mental models of the communication context. Non-verbal: any part of communication that doesn"t use words, facial gestures, voice intonation, physical distance and silence. Email: preferred medium for coordinating work, significantly alters communication flow. Chapter 9: communicating in teams and organizations: reduces selective attention bias. Problems: emotions poorly communicated, reduce politeness and respect. Internet or mobile based channels with user-generated, interactive content: blogs, wikis, tweets, personal sites, more conversational and interactive, most can develop public identity, encourage communities, serve diverse functions, presenting identity, enabling conversations. Influences meaning of verbal symbols: less rule bound than verbal communication, most is automatic and non-conscious. Emotional contagion: the automatic process of sharing another person"s emotions by mimicking their facial expressions and other non-verbal behaviour.
