Intellectual property rights can provide substantial barriers to trade. Member countries can no longer discriminate against specific forms of technology for patent protection and may not discriminate in respect of where an invention was made. Each member country will provide a 20 year term of patent protection (from the date of application or priority). In addition, the patent owner is to have the right to supply a market for the patented product with imported products.
