Chapter 5 it infrastructure and emerging technologies. Defining it infrastructure: consists of a set of physical devices and software applications that are required to operate the entire enterprise. (also a set of firm-wide services budgeted by management and comparing both human and technical capabilities). Computing platforms, telecommunications, data management, applications, physical facilities, it research and development: (cid:862)service platform(cid:863) perspective makes it easier to understand the business value provided by infrastructure investments. Evolution of it infrastructure: there has been five stages of evolution, general-purpose mainframe and minicomputer era (1959 present): A period of highly centralized computing under the control of programmers and operators. Minicomputing offered businesses computing in smaller groups rather than one large one for the entire firm: personal computer era (1981 present, client/server era (1983 present): Desktop or laptops are called clients, and are networked to powerful server (software or physical computer where the server runs) computers that provide the client with a variety of services.
