INT 905 Chapter Notes - Chapter 3: Conflict Avoidance, Mental Health Professional, Middleground
Document Summary
Conflict avoidance refers to responding to perceived incompatibilities or expressed differences by attempting to withdraw, ignore, or suppress the conflict situation in hope it"ll go away. Some strategies incl: putting problems on hold, invoking slow procedures to stifle conflict, using secrecy to preclude having to deal with conflict. Research on conflict avoidance builds upon the theory of conflict management styles, which suggests that people have one of five preferred modes of dealing with conflict: avoidance unassertive and uncooperative. Individual doesn"t immediately pursue his or her own concerns or those of the other person. Might take the form of diplomatically sidestepping an issue, postponing an issue until a better time, or simply withdrawing from a threatening situation: accommodation unassertive and cooperative. The person neglects his or her own concerns to satisfy the concerns of the other person; there"s an element of self-sacrifice in this mode.
