Leadership - the process of inspiring others to work hard to accomplish important
tasks
Communicate the vision, Build enthusiasm, Motivate commitment, hard work
Power - the ability to get someone else to do something you want done or to makes
things happen the way you want
Position power
Reward power - the capacity to offer something of value as a means of
influencing other people (influence through rewards)
Coercive power - the capacity to punish or withhold positive outcomes as a
means of influences other people (influence through punishment)
Legitimate power - the capacity to influence other people by virtue of
formal authority, or the rights of office (influence through authority)
Personal Power
Expert power - the capacity to influence other people because of specialized
knowledge (influence through special expertise)
Referent power - capacity to influence other people because of their desire
to identify personal with you (influence through identification)
Vision - a clear sense of the future
Visionary leadership - brings to the situation a clear sense of the future and an
understanding of how to get there
Servant leadership - is follower-centred and committed to helping others in their
work
Helping people use their talents to full potential while working together for
organizations that benefit society
Empowerment - enables others to gain and use decision-making power
Process through which managers enable and help others gain power and
achieve influence within the organization
Servant leaders empower others by providing them with the information,
responsibility, authority and trust to make decisions and act independently
Leadership traits
Drive, self confidence, creativity, cognitive ability, job relevant knowledge,
motivation, flexibility, honesty and integrity
Leadership style - the recurring pattern of behaviours exhibited by a leader
A leader high in concern for the task plans and defines the work to be done,
assigns task responsibilities, sets clear work standards, urges task
completion and monitors performance results
