62 views10 pages

Document Summary

Chapter 6: proteins- crucial components of all body tissues and in depth. Large complex molecules composed of amino acids. Primary source of nitrogen in diet synthesised. 20 different amino acids are used to make proteins. Cannot be produced by our own bodies. Transcription: use of genetic information in dna to make rna. Mrna copies the genetic information and carries it to the ribosome. Translation: conversion of genetic information in rna to assemble amino acids in the proper sequence to synthesize a protein on the ribosome. Primary structure: sequential order of amino acids (linear) Secondary structure: spiral shape due to chemical bonding between the amino acids. Tertiary structure: folding of many spiral shaped secondary structures. Quaternary structure: multiple tertiary structures folded together in a globular shape. Proteins lose their shape when subjected to: Denaturation results in an irreversible loss in protein function. Incomplete protein: does not contain all essential amino acids in suf cient quantities.
