Nomothetic: approach of explanation where it explains humanity in general, not just the people who participated in the study, satisfies 3 criteria of causation. Number of violent movies watched changes, as the level of violence. Proposed cause precedes the effect in time. Watching of violent movies came before increase in violence. Alternative explanations for the correlation observed have to be ruled out. Quantitative researchers choose research designs which help these 3 criteria. Once design is selected, specific method for collecting data has to be chosen. Variables: characteristic that varies, such as gender, income, athletic ability, etc. , Related to reliability if others are able to repeat it and get the same results validity three types applies to quantitative: measurement / construct validity.
