Psychoanalytic is commonly associated with sigmund freud: but also can be traced back to paul dubois. Studied catharsis form of therapy (talking out your problems) Believed that abnormal symptoms were caused by forces that were unconscious. Altered fundamental views: motivation theory, reversed theory of anxiety, model of personality based (id, ego, superego) Humans had innate drives (instincts) as the determining factors in life: behaviour is organized in efforts to satisfy those drives. Psychoanalytic theory two hypotheses: psychic determinism mental life is continuous manifestation of cause-related relationships, dynamic unconscious basic needs, desires, impulses are outside a person"s awareness. Unconscious holds 85% of the material in our minds: your drives, desires, attitudes, motivations, fantasies that exist and exert influence on how people think, feel, and behave. Conscious is the mental activity that we are aware of. Preconscious is thoughts and attitudes not available (to the conscious) but can be retrieved with enough effort. Subconscious is involuntary bodily processes (digestion, breathing, etc. )
